Q&A with Stamos Chondrodimos

Stamos Chondrodimos is admired for his perseverance in delivering works inspired by the environment in which they are located. The refined aesthetic approach, creativity, and attention to detail characterize each of his works. You are an office that takes a holistic approach to build a hotel. How do you choose the direction you want to give your space?

A hotel project is important to be based from beginning to end on specific design and aesthetic principles. In this way, a unique result is achieved that should not look like anything else. All design teams that take part in a project should respect and be able to develop the central concept that is usually created by the architect and the interior designer. Most of the time the inspiration starts from the place where each project is located.

The main characteristic of Interior Design Laboratorium is always to harmonize each project with the surrounding environment and to give the feeling that what we design has always been there. Depending on the project, there is a creative dialogue between us and the client where thoughts begin to become ideas and plans. The feeling we create for each project is influenced by the above but certainly also by personal aesthetic references.

You have many completed and ongoing projects. What is your favorite? What is the story behind this project?

From hotel projects without a second thought, I single out Istoria in Santorini as it was the first boutique accommodation that we designed and approached holistically as an Interior Design Laboratorium. We had all the freedom to create and be inspired by various local elements, resulting in presenting different spaces with a more modern look for the conditions of the time. We created storytelling influenced by the history of the building combined with personal creative references and of course the unique history of the island.

On the other hand, however, there are private residences where on the one hand you must listen and respect the customer's needs, while many times you could really go deeper and design unique custom constructions. Finding the project and the client that will allow you to work in such detail is a creative pleasure.

The importance of detail is pervasive in all your projects, whether they are hotels or houses. So how important details are when renovating or re-creating a space?

The detail for us is the A and Z in everything we undertake. We are interior designers and for us, it goes without saying that we work on what we design in detail. The philosophy of the office is based on a holistic approach and design, and we are not used to working space by halves. The unique feeling in each space is achieved through a serious design study and a careful combination of materials and finishes. The peaceful luxury that we mention many times is created from the above.
